Female Artists Command Spotlight in Heritage Auctions' European Art Auction

Continuing a recent noteworthy trend, Heritage Auctions' Fine European Art Auction Dec. 6 in Dallas, Texas, once again will feature an outstanding selection of works by woman artists.

Leading the group is Anne Redpath's highly expressive Still life with daffodils and tulips (estimate: $30,000-40,000). Redpath was a major figure of the Edinburgh School who forged a successful career painting intimate interior spaces, depictions of rural life that have a primitive quality and floral arrangements. Following study at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1913, Redpath exhibited her work regionally, eventually gaining an associate professorship at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1947, becoming the first female academician there in 1952.

"Her paintings frequently teeter on the brink of abstraction," Heritage Auctions Senior Fine Art Expert Marianne Berardi said, "with their lively marks and animated surfaces such as those in the present still life, which is a symphony in white."

The elegant, 19th-century Still life with flowers, a porcelain vase and a goldfish bowl, 1849 (estimate: $5,000-7,000) by Elise Puyroche-Wagner is an essay on the German artist's master of rendering a wide variety of textures. Puyroche-Wagner spent a good portion of her career in Lyon, France, a noted center for accomplished flower painting thanks to Lyon's history as a major center of textile design and production. Flowers were painted to serve as models for silk motif designers.

The auction also features handsome Post-Impressionist paintings by a pair of French artists, including Yvonne Canu's St. Tropez, le soir (estimate: $5,000-7,000) and Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange's Les pins and Venice , each of which carries a pre-auction estimate of $4,000-6,000. Both artists employed the pointillist technique popularized by better-known male artists Georges Seurat and Paul Signac - the latter was Selmersheim-Desgrange's longtime lover.

The auction includes a fine selection of 19th-century drawings, a group that is headlined by Pierre-Augste Renoir's Gabrielle, Jean et une petite fille, 1895 (estimate: $40,000-60,000), and a group of Flemish and Old Master drawings that includes Baldassarre Franceschini's Study of a male nude, seated, resting his chin on his left hand; A male nude in profile climbing a staircase, a separate study of his hand holding a stick (recto and verso) (estimate: $15,000-25,000) and Edude de cheval by Edgar Degas (estimate: $7,000-10,000).

The auction includes a selection of eight graphite sketches by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, as well as an impressive group of School of Paris paintings by figures including Marcel DyfEmilio Grau-SalaGeorges d'EspagnatEdouard CortesCharles Camoin and Louis Icart.

December 6 Ethnographic Art: American Indian, Pre-Columbian and Tribal Art Signature Auction - Dallas #5424
19th Century Iroquois War Club Among Top Draws in Heritage Auctions' Ethnographic Art: American Indian, Pre-Columbian and Tribal Art Auction

An Iroquois Ball Head War Club
A rare Iroquois weapon that is more than two centuries old could bring in $55,000 or more in Heritage Auctions' Ethnographic Art: American Indian, Pre-Columbian and Tribal Art Auction Dec. 6 in Dallas, Texas.

An Iroquois Ball Head War Club c. 1800 (estimate: $35,000-55,000), circa 1800, is a beautiful hand-carved hardwood piece with fine brown patina, measuring 27-1/2 inches long. Tracing back to the Iroquois tribe that lived mostly in what is now western and northern New York, it is a solid weapon, not just a ceremonial item.

"This is a beautiful weapon, and weapons are enormously popular with collectors, many of whom see them as the ultimate symbol of masculinity," Heritage Auctions Senior Ethnographic Art Specialist Delia Sullivan said. "Ball head war clubs like this rank right up there with the items in highest demand among that come to auction, like war shirts, so to find one as beautiful and rare as this one, and in such exceptional condition, makes the interest more than understandable."

Superb Aztec Quetzalcoatl Central Mexico, c. 1300-1521 AD (estimate: $20,000-25,000) is carved from heavy grey volcanic stone. The cylindrically coiled rattlesnake has its mouth wide open, exposing a human face with open eyes and mouth, and a long bar hangs horizontally from the pierced septum, over a bifurcated serpent's tongue. Quetzalcoatl is the Nahuatl name for the ancient plumed or feathered serpent god, associated by the Aztecs with the god of the wind, learning and the priesthood, master of life, creator and civilizer, the patron god of every art and inventor of metallurgy.

Large Dogon Post for Meeting House, Toguna Mali, c. early- to mid-20th century (estimate: $15,000-18,000) features a thick section of hardwood in large Y-form with a black surface. One side is carved with a standing female form in high relief in a cubistic style.

A Hopi Silver and Stone Bracelet Charles Loloma c. 1980 (estimate: $15,000-20,000) is a breathtaking piece with an array of stones, including turquoise, lapis, coral, iron wood, malachite and jet, signed by "Loloma."

Nayarit Village Scene with Pole Flyers West Mexico, c. 250 BC - 250 AD (estimate: $10,000-15,000) features a circular platform raised on four legs, a central pol with two dancers (or flyers), surrounded by more than a dozen human figures, some of whom are wearing plumed headdresses. Parrots sit on the roofs of two houses. The modern version of this is called palo volador, or "pole flyer." Pole flying is a performance to ask the deities to restore rain and fertility to the land.

Modern & Contemporary Art Auction
Thiebaud's Blueberry Custard Sells for $3.2 Million in Heritage Auctions' Modern & Contemporary Auction

Wayne Thiebaud's Blueberry Custard, 1961sold for $3,225,000 in Heritage Auctions' Modern & Contemporary Art Auction to break the house record for the most expensive piece of Modern & Contemporary Art ever sold through Heritage Auctions.

The painting was one of 16 lots sold that came from the private collection of the late Russ Solomon, founder of Tower Records, and boosted the total for the auction to $5,106,231. Blueberry Custard sparked bids from multiple collectors, and exceeded its high pre-auction estimate by 29%.

"Blueberry Custard was exhibited at Thiebaud's first show at Allan Stone Gallery in 1962," said Holly Sherratt, Heritage Auctions' San Francisco Director of Modern & Contemporary Art. "It hung out of public view and appropriately in Russ Solomon's kitchen for many years until it was exhibited again at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art in UC Davis in 2018. What a fun coincidence that we brought the painting to market as Thiebaud turned 99. I was honored to mark this important birthday with such a historically-significant painting."

Poised to Infinity, 1991
Robert Arneson's Poised to Infinity, 1991, one of three Arneson lots from Solomon's collection, sold for $143,750, more than double the low estimate.

"While Russ Solomon was the King of Music with a legendary ear, he also had an amazing collecting eye," added Sherratt. "This bronze was one of many monumental sculptures that Solomon collected from local artists. His house was designed around his art collection and this sculpture stood in the entry courtyard welcoming Russ's friends to his spacious art-filled home.

"Russ loved art that was big and bold and this collection was such a pleasure to promote."

Ian Hornak's Homage to Van Hysum (Baroque Flowerpiece with Minerals, A Monkey, and the Milky Way), 1989 sold for a record $22,500 surpassing the previous record of only $7,000."

2019 December 13 - 15 Animation Art Signature Auction - Beverly Hills #7216
Snow White, Bugs Bunny, Pinocchio, Disney Renaissance Among Top Draws in Animation Art Auction

A magnificent Master setup from Disney's first animation feature could bring $50,000 or more in Heritage Auctions' Animation Art Auction Dec. 13-15 in Beverly Hills, California.

The first animation to span three days, the event is the largest ever held, with 1,832 lots, and includes one of the most coveted Bugs Bunny lots of all time, the estate of the man referred to as "the world's greatest animator" and lots from the "Disney Renaissance" that helped bring film animation back to its highest levels.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Snow White Production Cel on Master Production Background (Walt Disney, 1937) is from one of the most terrifying scenes in the film, in which the Huntsman tells Snow White to "Run! Run away, hide, anywhere, never come back, go, go go, go, hide!" after realizing that he can't bring himself to kill her. J.B. Kaufman writes in his the book Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - The Art and Creation of Walt Disney's Classic Animated Film: "Invited to create expressionist imagery for Snow White's flight into the forest, the studio concept artists rose to the challenge with wildly evocation sketches and paintings."

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Snow White Production Cel on Master Production Background (Walt Disney, 1937)
"This is an extraordinary image from one of the most beloved Disney films of all time," Heritage Auctions Animated Art Director Jim Lentz said. "The trees with the angry faces were the creation of Disney artist Gustaf Tenggren, and an idea Walt Disney originally rejected. But he eventually gave in, and those backgrounds eventually became an important part of the film."

Pinocchio Concept Painting by Gustaf Tenggren (Walt Disney, 1940) depicts Geppetto's workshop and the surrounding village, with children running off to school. The 16-by-11-inch museum-quality painting (estimate: $35,000+) is labeled "Seq.1A, Pinocchio" and signed by the artist, appears on page 90 in the book Pinocchio by Pierre Lambert and is an exceptional item from an important artist and a historic Disney film.

Also from the studio's first animation feature film comes Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Snow White Bashful and Sneezy Production Cel and Key Master Background (Walt Disney, 1937), with a pre-auction estimate of $25,000+, shows Snow White kissing Bashful goodbye, warning him to "Be awful careful ... because if anything happened to you ... I'd ..." The historically important Key Master setup of Snow White sending the dwarfs off to work is hand-inked and hand-painted, with characters ranging in size from five to eight inches tall. Backgrounds in the film were painted by Samuel Armstrong, Claude Coats, Merle Cox, Phil Dyke, Ray Lackrem, Mique Nelson and Maurice Noble.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Storyboard Art by Gustav Tenggren (Walt Disney, 1937) actually is a museum-worthy pair of storyboards from the scene in which the Prince startles Snow White at the well, and then greeting her. "Hello ... did I frighten you? Wait, wait. Please don't run away." Tenggren became Chief Illustrator and one of the art directors on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs shortly after getting hired by Disney in 1936, and his work was used in theatrical release posters, lobby cards and even in a two-month series in Good Housekeeping magazine before the film's release.

The auction features a trove of lots from the films sometimes called the "Disney Renaissance," a group thought to be responsible for boosting animation's popularity up to its highest popularity that includes Disney favorites like AladdinBeauty and the BeastThe Lion KingThe Little MermaidWho Framed Roger Rabbit? , etc.

"These films were made during a great resurgence of popularity for Disney," Lentz said. "These films were so well made they allowed adults to remember the great Disney movies of years past, while creating an entirely new generation of Disney animation fans."

2019 December 10 Watches & Fine Timepieces Signature Auction - New York, NY #5422
Rolex Watches Presented to Balloon Flight Pioneer Julian Nott Offered in Heritage Auctions' Timepieces Auction

Rolex, The Julian Nott Collection Ref. 1655 Explorer II, Issued and Used During 1974 Record Breaking Elevation of 45,836 ft. in Bhopal India, Circa 1972
Three extraordinary Rolex watches that were presented to legendary balloon flight pioneer Julian Nott will be offered in Heritage Auctions' Timepieces Auction Dec. 10 in New York.

Nott reached new frontiers in ballooning, in terms of altitudes reached and distances covered, and also helped develop technology that forever changed ballooning, in areas such as the use of solar power and flying in extreme temperatures. He set 79 world ballooning records and 96 British aviation records, and died in March 2019.

Like Nott, Rolexes are heralded for their precision and performance, even in adverse conditions; Mercedes Gleitze wore a Rolex Oyster in 1927 for her 10-hour swim across the English Channel, and a British climbing team summited Mount Everest for the first time wearing another version of the same watch in 1953. Rolex's response to Nott's ascent into the top 10 percent of the atmosphere was to draw a parallel between

Rolex, The Julian Nott Collection Ref. 1655 Explorer II, Issued and Used During 1974 Record Breaking Elevation of 45,836 ft. in Bhopal India, Circa 1972 (estimate: $20,000+) was presented when Nott broke his own ballooning altitude record, which previously stood at 35,971 feet. After years of preparation, Nott and copilot Felix Pole soared over central India in January 1974 to his new record in the Daffodil II, which was the largest balloon ever constructed. The flight coincided with a multi-national print campaign by Rolex, which touted the indestructibility of both Nott and the Rolex Explorer II that he wore. Thanks to Julian Nott and Felix Pole," the promotion blared, the Rolex Oyster is now guaranteed to float to 45,000 feet." Nott was humbled by the attention, enough so that he wrote to Rolex in 1976 to suggest that he did not deserve to be in the same class of contemporary Rolex spokesmen as violinist Yehudi Menuhin, author Frederic Forsyth or golf legend Arnold Palmer.

The 40mm stainless steel three-body case houses a matte black dial with painted tritium hour markers and white luminous baton hands. It has a Rolex signed stainless steel bracelet with a flip lock clasp, and is signed Rolex on the case, dial and movement.

Five years after Nott and Pole climbed to their record altitude over central India, American Chauncey Dunn topped the mark when he reached 53,206 feet over Iowa, inspiring Nott to rise to the challenge of reclaiming his title. After 13 months of preparation, Nott rose above Colorado for about 70 minutes until he reached a height of 55,134, rewriting his name in the record book while wearing a Rolex, The Julian Nott Collection Ref. 16760 GMT-Master II with Unique Dial (estimate: $17,000+). Rolex's PR effort included a declaration that, apart from style choices, the inclusion of such a watch "was never really in doubt."

It features a 40mm stainless steel case, a black dial with applied tritium hour markers and dark grey minute track and script, with luminous skeleton hands. The Rolex signed Oyster bracelet includes a flip lock clasp, and it is signed on the case, dial and movement.

Rolex, The Julian Nott Collection Ref. 16013 (estimate: $5,000+) was presented by Rolex to Nott for the 1984 Rolex Awards: "Spirit of Enterprise." For 15 years, Nott planned a non-stop balloon circumnavigation of Earth - a mission that ultimately was completed not by Nott, but by Swiss psychiatrist and aviator Bertrand Piccard. The documentation dates back to the presentation of the watch, which is engraved on case back, "The Rolex Awards for Enterprise, Julian Nott, 1984." The packet includes a Rolex press release recognizing Nott for planning "The First Non-Stop Balloon (sic) Voyage Around the World," as well as the calligraphed award certificate issued directly to Nott. Collectors will be drawn immediately to an accompanying letter from Nott to Rolex, requesting the production of an Explorer constructed of titanium, a metal that has been implemented by numerous watch brands, but not yet by Rolex.

The watch features a 36mm case of stainless steel and gold, a champagne dial with applied gold hour markers and a gold luminous baton. With self-winding movement, rhodium finish and 27 jewels, it includes a Rolex signed Jubilee bracelet in stainless steel and gold, and is signed Rolex on case, dial and movement.

Landmark Auction of Historic World War II Flags Presented by Heritage Auctions

An unprecedented array of more than 200 flags from World War II, all with identified associations, comprises Heritage Auctions' Historic Flags of World War II Auction, which will be held live in Dallas with worldwide bidding via HA.com on Dec. 14.

Included are highlights from the collection assembled by historian Dr. Clarence Rungee of Connecticut. Through his tireless effort to save a great many of these national treasures for posterity, the collection contains a large selection of flags related to the Normandy invasion, including the "First to Land" Omaha Beach Ensign of the USS Empire Javelin.

Dr. Rungee, a prominent physician who served as both historian and Surgeon General for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, had grown concerned that flags with dramatic and important historical connections were not being preserved. A combination of dogged perseverance and judicious use of his wide network of contacts enabled Rungee to salvage many, notably from naval vessels which had been decommissioned and would otherwise have been destroyed.

His preservation efforts, which included a flag aboard the USS Missouri on the day of the Japanese surrender signing, were recognized with a personal invitation from Admiral Chester Nimitz to attend a ceremony of the first anniversary of the Japanese surrender, which had been inked on that vessel. As word of Dr. Rungee's efforts spread, numerous donors came forth with more noteworthy flags.

In the ensuing years Dr. Rungee wrote tirelessly to various state and local governments, as well as to foreign capitals, seeking flags for the collection, which eventually would number nearly 700. Dr. Rungee maintained a small museum displaying his collection, but after his death most of the collection went into storage, where it remained for decades.

James Ferrigan, a leading vexillologist (one who who consulted on the restoration of the famous The Star-Spangled Banner, has been enlisted by Heritage Auctions to assist in authenticating and expertizing the collection.

"This is the most significant holding of World War II flags in private hands," Ferrigan said. "As a flag historian it is an honor and privilege to assist in bringing these remarkable flags to light, and to help assure that they will pass into the hands of institutions and serious collectors who will appreciate their importance and honor and preserve them."

Each flag sold at auction will be accompanied by a letter of expertise from Ferrigan.
