The José Rodrigues Collection of Victoria Sovereigns
Victoria gold Sovereign 1879 MS61 NGC
Victoria gold Sovereign 1879 MS61 NGC
Our newest monthly world coin auction is the José Rodrigues Collection of Victoria Sovereigns, open for bidding at coins.HA.com now, with the live session scheduled for December 29. These sovereigns form a part of the José Rodrigues Collection, a collection that features the NGC #1 set of circulation strike Great Britain sovereigns (1838-1901), as well as the #2 set of circulation strike Australian sovereigns (1856-1901). Rounding out the offering are a handful of half sovereigns and a 1 Pond coin from South Africa.

The highlight of this auction is the 1879 sovereign from Great Britain, at NGC MS61 not only the finest certified example of this low mintage date, but the only such coin to have been certified in any mint state grade. The Australian offerings are led by an 1887-M Young Head/Shield type sovereign, at MS62 the finest example of this rare date we have had the pleasure to offer.

A few of the additional highlights include:

Seldom Seen Selections: Choice 1827 Capped Head Half Eagle
1827 $5 BD-1, R.6, MS64+ PCGS
1827 $5 BD-1, R.6, MS64+ PCGS
The 1827 Capped Head Left half eagle claims a mintage of 24,913 pieces, with just a single variety known for the date. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was used to strike the extremely rare BD-2 variety of 1826 and the very rare BD-1 1828/7 variety as well.

The surviving population of this issue is a matter of some dispute. Earlier catalogers, like Henry Chapman and B. Max Mehl, believed only 8-10 specimens were extant. Walter Breen expanded this estimate to 12-15 pieces in all grades in 1987. David Akers guessed there were "at most 20" examples surviving. Recently, PCGS Coinfacts estimated "about 30" and the Bass-Dannreuther reference postulates 35-45 specimens are known. PCGS and NGC have combined to certify 34 different coins, including an unknown number of crossovers and resubmissions.

To help clear up the confusion, we have compiled a roster of extant coins, expanded from notes by Saul Teichman and our own Auction Archives. It is possible that some duplication has occurred and it may be that a few specimens are currently held in long term collections and may not be represented in our survey. Still, our research has been quite extensive, and we doubt that more than a few pieces have escaped our notice. We have isolated 16 different coins, three of them impounded in institutional collections, and a number of earlier citations that may or may not be duplicate appearances of the coins in the roster. From this, it seems that the 1827 is much rarer than most present-day researchers believe, and the surviving population is actually more in line with Akers' "at most 20" estimate of 30 years ago.

Our January 8-13 FUN Signature Auction features a delightful PCGS-graded MS64+ example with sharply detailed design elements in most areas and just a touch of softness on Liberty's highest curls and the eagle's claws. The well-preserved orange and olive-gold surfaces show only minor signs of contact. A tiny color spot at star 10 can serve as a pedigree marker. The opportunity to acquire such an attractive example of this celebrated rarity may not recur for years.

Diamond, White Gold Pendant-Necklace
An extraordinary pendant necklace featuring a diamond weighing nearly 10 carats is expected to be among the top attractions in Heritage Auctions' Holiday Fine Jewelry Auction Dec. 8 in New York.

The bulk of the sale comes from four large estates, one from Massachusetts and three from California, and features an assortment of contemporary designer jewelry that literally can be characterized as being "from A to Z" - in this case, from Adler to Zolotas.

"As we approach this festive holiday season, Heritage Auctions is proud to offer an exceptional assortment of fine jewels in our Holiday Auction," said Jill Burgum, Senior Director of Fine Jewelry at Heritage Auctions. "There is a notable emphasis on diamonds in a wide range of colors, shapes and sizes, from 1.00 carat to 9.62 carats."

The auction includes treasures sure to appeal to connoisseurs of all levels.

Diamond, White Gold Pendant-Necklace (estimate: $100,000-130,000) is simultaneously simple and stunning, showcasing an impressive pear-shaped diamond weighing 9.62 carats, suspended by a fine 18k white gold chain.

Diamond, Gold Bracelet, Cartier, French (estimate: $8,000-12,000) is an Egyptian Revival-themed cuff depicting Horus, god of sky, war and kinship, featuring full-cut diamonds weighing a total of 3.50 carats, set in 18k gold marked Cartier 622040, with French hallmarks.

From a private collection in New Jersey comes an Antique Spinel, Diamond, White Gold Necklace (estimate: $6,000-8,000). The necklace centers a mine-cut diamond weighing 3.10 carats embellished by oval and cushion-shaped spinel with a combined weight of approximately 45.00 carats and complemented by single-cut diamonds with a combined approximate weight of 7.00 carats, set in white gold.

Jadeite Jade, Sapphire, Gold Objet de Vertu, Marchak, French (estimate: $4,000-6,000) features a carved jadite jade bull gazing through round sapphire cabochon eyes. It includes 18k gold accented horns and hooves, marked Marchak, with French hallmarks.

An elegant Art Deco Diamond, Black Enamel, Platinum, Gold Compact, Cartier, French (estimate: $2,000-3,000) features baguette and rose-cut diamonds set in platinum accents, enhanced by black enamel applied on 18k gold, marked Cartier with French hallmarks.

The collection will be showcased from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., Dec. 6-7, at the Fletcher-Sinclair Mansion in New York City.

Japanese Swords Among Highlights in Heritage Auctions' Civil War, Militaria, Arms & Armor Auction

A spectacular selection of 71 Japanese swords, firearms and a suit of armor, considered the finest such collection offered at auction in nearly three decades, is among the headline items offered in Heritage Auctions' Civil War, Militaria, Arms & Armor Auction Dec. 8 in Dallas, Texas.

A Spectacular Museum Worthy Juyo Heavy Silver High Relief Dragon Mounted Wakizashi with Signed Fuchi and Tsuba
"This collection has been called the finest to come to auction since Dr. Walter Compton's collection sold in 1992," Heritage Auctions Arms & Armor Consignment Director David Carde said. "There is extraordinary historical significance to some of these pieces, some of which are going to auction for the first time."

Among the top lots in the collection is a Spectacular Museum-Worthy Juyo Heavy Silver High Relief Dragon Mounted Wakizashi with Signed Fuchi and Tsuba (estimate: $25,000+), which features a 58.7-cm cutting edge and wild medari hamon with tobiyaki spots. The blade has superbly cut bohi (grooves) through the nakago. The kosharae are of the finest quality throughout the cast and chased high relief fuchikashira with gold highlights. The koiguchi is of heavy silver, and the menuki of hosokaugua mon appears to be solid gold.

Also featured is a Very Rare and Important Triple Maker Juyo Shinto Katana by Masateru, Kaneshige and Kanetsune with Original Gold Cutting Test (estimate: $20,000+). With a 72.5-cm cutting edge and very wide complex notare hamon and Itame hada. A very important and ultra-collectible cutting test triple maker katana, the Ubu nagako features full Kaneshige signature omote and full Masateru signature on ura.

Among the top lots outside the sword collection is a Huge Civil War Archive of Colonel Isaac Dyer 15th Maine (estimate: $26,000+). Col. Dyer, who later became a Brevent Brigadier General, served with the 15th Maine from December 1861 through September 1865. Housed in two wooden trunks Dyer brought to Maine is a virtual time capsule of materials from Dyer's travels through the War Between the States.

Cased & Highly Engraved Matched Pair of Beretta S06 EELL Over & Under Shotguns, Engraving by Giancarlo Pedretti (estimate: $25,000+) include serial numbers A01169B and A01170B on the barrels and receiver of each weapon, each of which features a blued finish, as well as an elaborately scroll engraved coin-finished receiver, a blued lever and triggerguard and a gold-plated trigger.

Union Corporal's Forage Cap & Frock Coat Set Id'D to Corp. George Schmultz of Co. G, 188th Pennsylvania (estimate: $24,800+) was pictured on pages 20 and 21 in The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics by Stephen W. Sylvia and Michael J. O'Donnell published in 1978. At the time, the items were in the Collection of John Henry Kurtz. Included are an excellent Forage Cap with brass lettering denoting Corporal Schmultz's unit with a "G" over "188" over "PV," which stands for "Co. G, 188th Pennsylvania Volunteers." Also included are one of the nicest known examples of an 18th Corps Badge and an outstanding cap with all original insignia.

There has been much debate regarding whether or not these coins were originally issued in special sets, since they were never in any form of special Mint packaging, and official Special Mint Sets were not issued until 1965. "Sets" of 1964 coins, including special strikes of the cent through half dollar, first began appearing in Stack's sales in the early 1990s. It is believed that most of those sets came from New York coin dealer Lester Merkin. The 1964 SMS Kennedy half dollar is struck on a 90% silver planchet, from a single pair of dies, showing much sharper detail than the regular issue and having a satiny surface texture. We

10 US Rare Quarter Dollars Value

The quarter (short for "quarter dollar") is a U.S. coin with a denomination worth 25 cents, or 1/4 of a U.S. dollar. Formally it is known as a "quarter dollar." It has a diameter of 24.26 millimeters (0.955 inches) and a nominal thickness of 1.75 millimeters (0.069 inches). Quarters that are currently minted for circulation by The United States Mint are composed of outer layers of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel, with a core of pure copper. Individual coins minted explicitly for coin collectors can consist of the copper-nickel alloy or a distinctive combination of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. History of the Quarter Dollar The United States quarter dollar was authorized by the Mint Act of April 2, 1792. Although the  United States Mint  could have started producing them immediately, the U.S. Mint did not mint the first quarter until 1796. At that time, the United States Mint did not create coins on its own accord. It waited
